Our Story: A Detroit Tradition Since 1940
Danto Furniture’s story began in 1940 when Julius Danto, a Lithuanian-Jewish immigrant, opened the original furniture store in Southwest Detroit. Built through hard work, personal service, and a commitment to helping others, the business became a trusted destination for Detroit families searching for quality furniture at affordable prices.
As Detroit grew and changed, Danto Furniture grew alongside it. The store served generations of customers, including many immigrant families establishing new lives and furnishing their first homes in the United States. Danto became known as a welcoming neighborhood business where customers could receive personal attention, honest value, and service in multiple languages.
For more than 85 years, Danto Furniture has remained rooted in Southwest Detroit. The business operated for decades near West Vernor Highway before moving in 2022 to its current location at 7741 Dix Street, at the corner of Dix and Central. The move provided Danto with a larger, more accessible showroom while keeping the business close to the community that helped build its name.
Over the decades, generations of Detroit-area families have purchased their living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, mattresses, appliances, and other home essentials from Danto. Many customers who first visited the store with their parents and grandparents have returned years later to furnish homes of their own. That lasting relationship with the community is an important part of the Danto legacy.
In 2026, Danto Furniture entered a new chapter under new local ownership. Although ownership has changed, the history and significance of the Danto name remain an important part of who we are. Our goal is to respect the foundation built since 1940 while bringing fresh leadership, new ideas, an expanded product selection, competitive pricing, and a more modern shopping experience.
